🍋 Severance Pay Calculator
Because if they’re kicking you out, they’d better cough up the cash.
Thinking about the fork—or already on the wrong end of it? This calculator helps you figure out how much severance pay you might be entitled to if you’re involuntarily separated from federal service (translation: fired, RIF’d, “reorganized,” or otherwise bureaucratically booted).
The math comes straight from OPM’s severance playbook, but we’ve done the boring part for you. All you need is your pay info, time served, and age. Why age? Because in one of the few times the system throws you a bone, you actually get a little extra if you’re over 40.
Here’s what we’re calculating:
- Your basic severance = 1 week of pay for each of your first 10 years of service, 2 weeks per year after that, plus a little extra for fractional years.
- If you’re over 40? Add 2.5% more per “quarter” (every 3 months) of age beyond 40. Hey, they finally admit experience is worth something.
You can enter either your annual salary (we’ll convert it to weekly) or plug in your weekly pay directly if you’ve got it.
👀 Fine Print Alert: This is a simplified tool based on OPM’s formulas. It doesn’t account for every quirky exception (because we’re not magicians or HR bots). And remember: actual severance pay is capped at 52 weeks, and offset by things like immediate annuity eligibility, so if you’re double-dipping, Uncle Sam might adjust your lemonade recipe.
So pop in your numbers and see what they might owe you. Then decide if it’s enough to start planning your “I’m-outta-here” cake.
